Phuentsholing In South Bhutan

Located in the southwest part of the kingdom, the town of Phuentsholing is the land border access open for international tourists. Almost 90% of trade in Bhutan is with India and is conducted through this commercial hub.

Phuentsholing is approximately 175 km east of the Indian national airport at Bagdogra, nearby historic Darjeeling located in the State of West Bengal. It is a convenient entry and exit point for travelers who visit the Indian State of Sikkim and hilly district of Darjeeling along with Bhutan.

From Phuentsholing begins a mountain journey of almost unbelievable beauty. The road leads from the northern Indian tea plantations through endless turns, hair-spin bends and daring stretches curved into the mountain rock ensuring the most fascinating views of the Himalayan mountain ranges, and a wide variety of fauna and flora along the roadside. The six-hour Phuentsholing-Thimphu drive experience the sudden change in altitude, temperature and vegetation that heralds the beginning of a truly memorable stay in Bhutan from the foot hills, passing through many villages and spectacular landscape.

For bird-lover the Rufous-necked Hornbill (Acero Nepalensis) usually seen in pairs or in large feeding folks and the dark purple-brown bird, Purple Cochoa (Cochoa Purpurea) may be seen in Chhuka and the surrounding regions.

Zangdopelri Lhakhang: Located in the heart of the bustling commercial town of Phuentsholing is the Zangdopelri Lhakhang built in 1982. A small public park around this temple allows the inhabitants of Phuentsholing town to stroll in the fresh air at the day’s end.

Crocodile Farm :Started in early 1980s, the crocodile farm in Phuentsholing contains the crocodiles and alligators. Apparently, hundreds of people both locals and tourists visit the mini-zoo daily to see the most frightening reptiles.

Kharbandi Monastery: Standing above the Indian plains like a sentinel, Kharbandi Monastery was founded in 1967 by the late Royal Grandmother Ashi Phuntsho Choden. The monastery garden offers a beautiful view over the plains and the bustling town of Phuentsholing. Just above the monastery is a College of Science and Technology, the country’s only college offering undergraduate degree program in engineering. It is a residential college with good atmosphere for learning and creative activities.
